Colored pencils and oil pastels on paper + computer generated. An illustration for the cover of the book: “Everything Is Illuminated” by Jonathan Safran Foer. This illustration is part of a series I made for this book, here is another one: https://artbydina.wordpress.com/2010/05/21/the-bead-of-condemnation/.  The jewish villagers in this forgotten shtetl which name is a story by itself (Trochenbrod or Zofiówka), are the theme of the background with their grotesque expressions. I enjoyed doing this cover because of the portrait freedom I could use here, while usually I stick to the realistic look. There is something strong in cover illustration, it must be specific and communicative – to make it this way, and still be interesting  is a unique art by itself.

Acrylic on paper 26/42 cm. This painting is for my final project, an illustration for a poem by Kadya Molodowsky. I already uploaded a post with another double spread from the same project: “already six years old, with firy curls”: https://artbydina.wordpress.com/2010/05/19/already-six-years-old-with-firy-curls/. I need to make some changes in the project, and the illustration and characteristic of the girl might be different from what I did. Today I am going to take some pictures of a six-year-old girl, for a character study. I hope the project will come out good, and I will upload the results when they will be ready.

My grandma, lucya (Liudmila). Watercolor and gouache on a small piece of paper, quick painting. This painting is made by a photograph I took few days before my wedding in 2008. She was born in Saint Petersburg and now she lives in Berlin. I like her strong yet sensitive character. Art is something that flows in my family tree, but she is one of those who don’t paint. Still, I think I learned from her about the art of life, which is the most important kind of art.

Oil pastels on paper.  An illustration for the book: “Everything Is Illuminated” by Jonathan Safran Foer. Yankel is being condemned by the society, and the punishment is to wear a bead to remind him of that. This illustration is part of a series I made for this book, here is the book cover: https://artbydina.wordpress.com/2010/05/30/book-cover-illustration-for-%e2%80%9ceverything-is-illuminated%e2%80%9d/. I really liked reading it, and it inspired my imagination, especially about the appearance and behaviour of the jewish villagers in this forgotten shtetl which name is a story by itself (Trochenbrod or Zofiówka).
